The Allegheny Student Government general assembly meeting that was held Thursday of last week was exciting for me – the new Sophomore Class proxy Senator – when all the problems I had with being a rookie to the squad were put to rest. The meeting began at 7:30 when I sat with my fellow Sophomore Senators and was handed the name tag of my predicessor. This was the 2nd week of my participation and still I had no formal name tag. On top of this I had the pleasure of looking down the long table and seeing official ASG Senatorial binders, which I did not have. I guess I would have to write on my beat up ASG designated notebook for another week…BUT role call came and instead of the name of my predicessor being called out and me answering, “Proxy,” mine was called and I gave a confident, “present!” At the end of the meeting I was called up to the Exec table and promised my official ASG binder, notebook, AND nametag. It was a good day for the Rook. Besides my trivialities a potential serious matter was brought before the Senators under New Business. Sophomore class President Shane Downing made mention of possible hate speech in The Campus, and immediately whispers sounded through the lobby. The matter was discussed for five minutes and a conclusion was reached to not deal with the matter as ASG. The difficulty in addressing the issue was in the fact that the hate speech was directed towards an alias and not an actual person, as well the language used was considered by some not to be hateful. Hopefully everything has worked out between the Campus and the author of the article – a fellow Senator. I saw her meeting with some Overkill staff afterwards. Thanks for reading! Until Next Time,
