This past week’s meeting featured Ken Hanna and Cliff Willis as guest speakers. The normal course of events happened during the beginning of the meeting, and then attention was quick to shift to Mr. Hanna and Mr. Willis of the Maintenance department of Allegheny. ASG is seeking to bring in representatives from organizations and departments of Allegheny such as admissions and maintenance to exercise proper communication between the student body and the community of Allegheny as a whole.
Here’s a quick recap from the discussion held with the physical plant:
- They are seeking to invest in new recycling receptacles.
- They have been looking into doing a “facelift” on the interior of Caflisch Hall.
- The heat tape on the fallen gutters of Montgomery had failed to work during the beginning of the winter. As many witnessed earlier this month, there were some stellar ice cycles hanging from Montgomery. Maintenance fixed the heat tape before the gutters fell, but it was too late.
- They would like to get rid of digitalize all exterior doors. Then later turn their efforts to digitalize locks in the interior of buildings.
- They are still trying to figure out where to place the garbage bin located in the central courtyard of Baldwin.
A student senator asked how the students of Allegheny could aid maintenance’s efforts. A quick response followed, “Close your windows, and turn off your lights.” (lights-out initiative!)
In closing, it was mentioned that Allegheny is seeking to invest 20-25% in wind power. “Big Universities are doing it…so we can too,” Mr. Hanna stated. The digital work order system that Maintenance uses, Impulse, is currently backed up. They are still trying to clean up the system and prioritize work orders. If you have any suggestions for maintenance, go ahead and email cwillis@allegheny.edu with suggestions.
