Winterfest

Winterfest will take place on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 from 6-8PM behind the Alumni Center and in front of the Campus Center.  You can watch an 8 ft. alligator be carved out of ice, or take place in the snowman building contest with prizes for the winners.  We will also have free food and hot drinks as well as free beanie hats!  Don’t worry about being too cold, because we also have heated tents to stand under.  So, come out for some fun in the snow and beat the winter blues!

Invisible Children Sponsored by Class of 2011

In the spring, Roadies from the organization Invisible Children will be coming to campus to present a documentary followed by a presentation and testimonies. The group is dedicated to fundraising and promoting awareness of the ongoing war in Uganda where children have been abducted from their homes and forced to serve in violent militias. The conflict has also created horrible living conditions for a million citizens still living in Internally Displaced Persons camps. Our spring event will feature the Roadies as well as a fundraising event that will combine the efforts of other clubs and organizations on campus.

Schools for Schools is another effort of the organization. Donate new or gently used books in our drop boxes around campus. They go to impoverished schools in Uganda to rebuild and provide education to children.

Freshman Class Plans for Spring Semester

The freshmen senators will be reaching out to their class through tabling efforts and a town hall meeting planned to be in Baldwin.  We want to be sure that we are addressing issues important to our classmates.  We are also working on some sustainability issues that will include making a video to inform the campus about composting at Allegheny and working with the Sophomore class to decrease water consumption on campus.  Another effort that is currently underway is choosing a philanthropy for our class.  The freshmen senators are also planning some fun events that will include water tubing and a carnival.

2010: Penny Wars & more…

We started off the year by having a Pennies War collecting $120.  80% of the money collected went to the Crawford County Special Olympics.  We’re continuing to inform the campus of important issues and currently working with the physical plant to help start a weekly project renewing our campus.

Class of 2011 Lights Out Initiative & Shopping Trip

One of our major projects for this year is the “Lights Out Initiative”. This is a two-pronged effort meant to reduce wasteful electricity use on campus. First, we presented a resolution to the Senate in the fall expressing student support for the installation of sensor activated light switches in academic classrooms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other eligible rooms such as the meeting rooms in the campus center. Second, we are looking for student involvement to pledge “accountability” and turn off lights when they are not needed. This is a big effort that we want everyone to be involved in, not just sophomores. Keep and eye out for our pledging tables if you haven’t signed up already!

We had over 50 people attend our fall trip to Grove City Outlets and are open to ideas for a spring activity. Let us know what you want to do!

Senior Class Events & Projects

The class of 2009 senators have planned a number of senior class social
functions during the fall 2008 semester. The first event organized was
held at the Meadville Sportsgarden earlier this semester. The second
social event is the “Senior Hot N Cold Christmas Bash” scheduled
for December 10. This gathering will be hosted in Schultz
Banquet Hall to celebrate the end of classes this semester as well as the
Holiday Season. It will feature free food and beverages for all senior
class members. The class of 2009 senators are also focusing on an
initiative to provide the campus with 24 hour computer lab spaces. The
senior senators feel it is important to provide students with a 24 hour
work space to replace the former “Gator Den” located in Caflisch Hall.
